Dear reader,

The story of Elm starts here and now, with this issue. Elm is a new online magazine on lifelong learning and adult education. It is for the adult education professional: educators, advocates, NGO people and policy-makers, in Europe and beyond. Also researchers and academics find interesting content in Elm.

Our promise to the reader

Elm supports the work of the adult education professional by keeping the reader up-to-date on the trends and phenomena of the adult learning world. The media spreads good practices and knowledge about the benefits of lifelong learning, reports on topical research and adds depth and context into important events and trends. It aims to offer a community of colleagues for its readers. Elm discusses learning in a broad sense, seeing it as a lifelong process comprising of formal, informal and non-formal learning, both vocational and liberal adult education.

LLinE + InfoNet = Elm

Elm is born out of a merger between LLinE, a well-established lifelong learning journal, and InfoNet, a European adult education correspondents’ network and media. Elm strives to combine the best traditions of both media: LLinE’s tradition in high-quality journalism combined with InfoNet’s Europe-wide correspondents’ network. Through this network Elm paints an authentic picture of the European adult education field.

Old LLinE and InfoNet content is still available in our archives tha you can browse either with the search bar (top of page) or in the “Theme issues” and “News” sections .

Biweekly content and Theme issues

The reader finds new content every two weeks. In addition to that, we will publish a theme issue four times a year, dedicated to a specific topic. The easiest way to follow Elm is to order the newsletter (look to the right margin of the page) or follow the magazine through its social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

The publishers

Elm is a European co-production. The Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation (LLinE’s old publisher) acts as responsible publisher, with co-publishers DIE (Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenenbildung), DFS (Danish Adult Education Association) and KEB (Katholische Erwachsenenbildung Deutschland). EPALE Germany acts as a sponsor. EAEA (European Association for the Education of Adults) and the NVL (Nordic Network for Adult Learning) act as advisors to the media.

Test issue on social media

The topic of our first theme issue is Adult Education and Social Media. Social Media is the new normal in our daily lives. Professionals from all walks of life need to take issue with it, or face obsolescence. What kind of learning spaces are social media? How can educators best harness social media’s potential? Or is social media an enemy of learning?

This issue features diverse content and showcases future Elm article types: for instance, in the Essay series we publish long-form content that goes deep into the bone of the topic. In Three voices, we investigate a given topic through three expert viewpoints. The Toolkit teaches the reader new tricks of the trade and the Debate pitches two experts agains each other in a battle of arguments.

This September issue is a test issue and we would like you to give feedback on the reading experience. We will draw lessons from the feedback for the official launch in December. We will publish a reader survey soon!

Enjoy Elm! Because learning, it really never ends.
